Have you been following HGTV’s Design Star? The competition has been “ferosh” as one contestant might say. Luckily, our local gal, Shelby Township’s own Trish Beaudet is doing well. She has made it through 4 cuts and while other contestants are literally weeping she has been standing tall. The fifth episode airs this Sunday, July 6 at 9 p.m. In honor of that, we’ll share these tips that Trish sent especially for Strut. She offers 10 tips to help you make the last finishing touches to your home’s designs.

(Off-television, Trish is the owner and designer of Finishing Touches Interiors by Design, Inc. Check out her Web site.)

Can’t see Sunday’s Show? It will be re-aired July 06, 9 PM; July 07, 1:00 AM, 11 PM; July 8, 3 AM; July 13 5 PM.

Trish’s Tips

1. Mix it don’t match it

By selecting different textures for your space you will create a unique designer look. This includes mixing wood tones throughout your room.

2. Don’t be afraid of color

Painting your room is the least expensive way to create the most dramatic effect in your home.

3. Skies the limit

When hanging drapery treatments, always place the treatments above the actual window. This will give the illusion of a more open space.

4. Go with what you like

It’s okay to mix different styles throughout your home. If your home is traditional and you like transitional artwork, go for it. Just make sure they share a common denominator of color.

5. Stick with your first instinct

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is second-guessing your initial decision. Designing your space is always about creating a feeling. Don’t talk yourself out of your fist choice. Your first instinct is usually correct.

6. An interior designer can be your greatest asset

A good designer can work within your budget while guiding you in selecting the proper elements for your home, saving you from making costly mistakes.

7. A well designed room doesn’t have to break the bank

Every piece in your room doesn’t have to cost top dollar. By spending your money on your key pieces, you can then fill in with elements from different price ranges.

8. Go for the unexpected

Unexpected pieces in a room create conversation. For example, by selecting an iron or crystal chandelier for your great room instead of a common ceiling fan, you will create a dramatic, unexpected look.

9. Go big or go home

This DesignStar saying can work for your home too. When selecting furniture and artwork for your home, the most common mistake is under-sizing these pieces. In a store, these items tend to always appear larger than they will in your room.

10. Every room should have a touch of glam

Always remember when finishing off a room, to add a touch of sophistication. Whether it’s a lamp adorned with crystals or an antiqued, mirrored Bombay chest, these pieces will add a touch of glam, regardless of your design style.
